Did you see this?\u00a0 In the news this week was a report about the results of the survey about the state of children’s general knowledge<\/a>?<\/p>\n

1 in 5 children aged 6 \u2013 12 years thought Buzz Lightyear was the first man on the moon (Neil Armstrong must be weeping)\u00a0and one third didn\u2019t know who invented the telephone.<\/p>\n

If yours don’t either, \u00a0you could at least\u00a0start by listening to\u00a0this<\/a>, the song sung by the mad professors in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.\u00a0\u00a0A nifty way to remember the big inventors and\u00a0a great inspiration to\u00a0pick yourself\u00a0up again after some mega-flop.<\/p>\n

The bit about the survey that depressed (and didn’t surprise) me was that, of course, \u00a0two thirds knew that the disease Cheryl Cole had was malaria and more than half could name the winner of The X Factor, Joe McElderry.\u00a0 Although there’s nothing desperately wrong with knowing that,\u00a0it\u2019s still\u00a0a pity these kids\u00a0don\u2019t also<\/strong> know\u00a0about the people who’ve really stamped their mark on our history.<\/p>\n

Of course, I’m writing this because we make films that are easy to watch and that teach you something of lasting value.\u00a0 Joe McElderry is probably going to disappear without trace pretty soon, whereas Louis Pasteur….well, enough said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
